Genta Bhuana Sari was formed in 1992 at Puri Kaleran, Peliatan, the home of Anak Agung Gede Mandera, a very well known musician, dance teacher, and choreographer from the village of Peliatan.
The group began its activities by performing barong-barongan in the streets of Peliatan during the religious festivals of Galungan and Kuningan. (Barong-barongan is a type of dance in which the dancer wears an animal mask and performs animal movements, accompanied by loud percussion music known as baleganjur). Two of Agung Mandera's sons, Anak Agung Gede Bagus Mahendra Erawan and Anak Agung Gede Oka Dalem, were involved in the formation of this group.
One of the reasons for founding this group was part of the effort to preserve and develop the music and dance of Peliatan, especially music designed for the Gong Kebyar orchestra.
