The Semara Pegulingan orchestra produces a very melodious sound, and as a result, it was frequently used to entertain the Balinese rulers in earlier times. The word Pegulingan means "to sleep" and in keeping with its name, the Semara Pegulingan orchestra was often played at night when the Balinese royal families were preparing to go to bed.

Today, the Semara Pegulingan orchestra is generally used to play instrumental music and to provide musical accompaniment for Balinese dances. In Balerung, the Semara Pegulingan orchestra is played by Tirta Sari gamelan group.

The Semara Pegulingan orchestra in Balerung was made in 1976 by Bapak Pande Gabler, a gong smith from Blahbatuh. This orchestra was commissioned as part of the effort to preserve and develop the classical Balinese Legong dances, especially the classical Pelegongan dances of Peliatan.
